Neighborhood

The tourist town of Calpe is located in the north of the province of Alicante in the Marina Alta region, between the towns of Benissa and Altea, occupying an area of ​​22.9 km2 with an average altitude of 20 m above the sea. In Calpe, there are three clearly differentiated large nuclei which are the urban area, the beaches and the urbanisations in which the type of urban construction, the distribution of space and the inhabitants varies completely. The Peñón de Ifach is the most characteristic and emblematic geographical element of Calpe that differentiates it from the rest of the Mediterranean tourist destinations. It is a rock formation 332 m high and 1 km deep. in the sea and divides the coast in two great bays, in which the two most important beaches of Calpe are found; that of "la Fossa" to the north and that of "Arenal - Bol" to the south. The magnitude of its dimensions and its exceptional beauty make it deserve the nickname of "Symbol of the Costa Blanca", being also declared a Natural Park in 1987 for its great scientific value. In addition to the Peñón de Ifach and the salt flats, the beaches and coves that extend along the 13 km of coastline stand out, constituting the basic components of the tourist product that corresponds to the "sun and beach" model. The configuration of the accommodation offer began in the sixties, as a consequence of the boom in the urban construction of second homes due to a strong demand from foreign origin motivated by the weather and by socio-economic factors. This circumstance was taken advantage of by builders and real estate developers and has made that currently the accommodation offer is of two types: -Residential Tourism: Formed by the homeowners, mostly from Central - Europe. They stay in Calpe throughout the year, except in the summer when they return to their countries and rent their property. -Vacation Tourism: Made up of young and middle-aged families from Spain and Central Europe, who visit Calpe mainly in summer. Además del Peñón de Ifach y las salinas, destacan las playas y calas que se extienden a lo largo de los 13 km de litoral constituyendo los componentes base del producto turístico que corresponde al modelo "sol y playa". La configuración de la oferta de alojamiento se inicio en los años sesenta, como consecuencia del auge en la construcción urbanística de segundas residencias debida a una fuerte demanda de procedencia extranjera motivada por la climatología y por factores socio - económico. Esta circunstancia fue aprovechada por constructores y promotores inmobiliarios y ha hecho que en la actualidad la oferta de alojamiento sea de dos tipos: -Turismo Residencial: Formado por los propietarios de las viviendas, procedentes en su mayoría de Centro - Europa. Permanecen en Calpe durante todo el año, excepto en verano que regresan a sus países y alquilan su propiedad. -Turismo Vacacional: Compuesto por familias jóvenes y de mediana edad procedentes de España y Centro - Europa, que visitan Calpe principalmente en época estival. Otra faceta de la gran oferta de entretenimiento en esta zona es "Terra Mítica" uno de los parques temáticos mas grandes de Europa que se encuentra a tan solo media hora en coche de Calpe, también en las cercanías se encuentran unos 5 campos de golf.
